DMD Systems Recovery was founded 25 years ago with the mission of preventing used electronic equipment from ending up in landfills. It is a family owned business based in Tempe, AZ (a suburb of Phoenix and home to Arizona State University). The current employee count is 25, up from less than 15 just 3 years ago. In 2019, the company relocated from a 10,000 square foot facility to a 27,000 square foot facility with a dedicated 3000 square foot room for data destruction. DMD services clients from all over the country and has completed a few overseas (Canada, Europe, and Japan) projects for our US customers with international sites.
The proliferation of electronic equipment continued unabated over the last three decades since the founding of DMD and that trend does not look to change any time in the future. The reputational and financial risk of disposing of this equipment in environmentally sustainable methods continues to grow. What has proliferated faster than electronic equipment is the collection and dissemination of data. Now when it comes time to retire a piece of electronic hardware, both risks (environmental sustainability and data security) need to be addressed. That is the mission of DMD.
DMD understands that it is difficult for its clients to determine what the appropriate standards for environmentally sustainable disposition and data security. This is why DMD chose two industry certifications to validate its effort on these two areas: R2 for environment and NAID for data security. R2 is a standard that was developed by SERI (Sustainable Electronics Recycling International) with the purpose of codifying sustainable disposition of electronic assets. The primary purpose is to prevent the equipment from ending up the landfill which meshed perfectly with DMD core mission. NAID (National Association for Information Destruction) certification was developed to communicate the best-in-class data security/destruction methodologies across the industry. Both certifications require 3rd party auditing of DMD’s facility and processes. Less than 10% of ITAD companies hold both certifications.
DMD continues to improve its ability to manage these two risks for its clients. As stated earlier the relocation to a larger facility that was built out to meet our security needs. Our data destruction capabilities continue to grow. This year DMD will destroy over 200 Petabytes of data. Having a dedicated room to the process gives us more capacity and better security around the unprocessed drives. Three years ago, DMD added on-site wipe capability and now we process 10,000+ hard drives per year at our client’s locations for those that need that require on-site data destruction. Last year DMD expanded its processing capability to include iPhones and tablets of which more than 10,000 are processed annually, from just hundreds in the past.
The need for these services will continue to grow and DMD will continue to expand its services and capabilities to meet the needs of our clients.
