An awards ceremony in Ecuador seeking to promote environmental preservation is saluting sustainability projects in the Americas. Correspondent Harris Whitbeck reports on Latin America’s “Green Awards” and the impact they’re having on the natural world. 

Award shows are usually filled with celebrities in fancy gowns paparazzi and the buzz that surrounds major entertainment events. 

But the carpet at one ceremony in Ecuador is not red but green. That's because the Latin American Green Awards are all about saving the environment.

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable Landscapes: Conserving biodiversity and improving livelihoods through sustainable tourism in the Ecuadorian Amazon. 

As part of its Sustainable Landscapes project, the Rainforest Alliance is working to help conserve the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, one of the most fragile and biodiverse ecosystems in Ecuador. 

In collaboration with local partners, we’ve created a new model of sustainable management for protected areas that reduces the impacts of tourism, protects unique wildlife species, and generates sustainable economic alternatives for indigenous communities within the reserve.
